Yo, yo, yo, check ça Fam, a Super Duty Tough Work update!

Folks may remember local hip hop outfit Super Duty Tough Work - or SDTW - from their performances at The Good Will Social Club and Winnipeg Jazz Festival. If you haven't checked out their live set, you will definitely want to be at this show! SDTW is kicking off a Western Canada mini-tour with a hip show in Winnipeg:

Remembering our friend Grant (Redworm)

Hello CKUW listeners,

In case you haven't heard, we are sharing some sad news in our community this week. Grant Davis, who performed under the DJ name Redworm, passed away unexpectedly last week. Friends of our radio show might be familiar with Grant as he was one of the hosts of the show that follows ours, Quadrafunk, on Friday nights, and he was also a supported of our show and of CKUW.

Grant was a thoughtful, intelligent, and kind person, with a fun and quirky taste in music. Grant's contributions to our radio community will be remembered. We will miss you, Grant.

In case you missed you it, Curtis Nowosad gave a call for an update on his comings and goings. Curtis is  part of this year's International Winnipeg Jazz Festival and recently released his newest album. When we spoke with him, he had just released another track from the new album, The Water Protectors . There's an interesting history about this song which tells listeners a bit more about this diverse and talented and creative artist:  https://www.nextbop.com/blog/watch-the-video-for-drummer-curtis-nowosads-new-single-the-water-protectors-premiere

C'est le Jazz Fest in Winnipeg

If you're in Winnipeg, you probably know the International Winnipeg Jazz Festival is going June 18-23. Lots of great shows so far: Celine McLorin Salvant, Joshua Redman, and Brian Blade at the Canadian Human Rights Museum; Dirty Catfish Brass Band, Snotty Nose Rez Kids, and DJ Shub at The Cube (and a wicked party at the King's Head afterwards); Common at the Concert Hall and Sebastian Gaskin as his opening act; many incredible local and Canadian artists and so much more to come!

Listeners to the show will be looking forward to Galactic (with Dirty Catfish Brass Band opening) tonight at the Burton Cummings Theatre and Curtis Nowosad tomorrow night (Saturday) at the West End Cultural Centre. We're certainly looking forward to these great shows!

And back again is the post-concert Jam Sessions at The Fairmont Hotel Lounge hosted by the one and only Derrick Gardner. Don't miss these fun and improvised performances!
