Check out local jazz & blues artist, June "Pepper" Harris for a special concert and CD release party. The show is this June 10 (2017) at Nicolino's (4-2077 Pembina Hwy), Winnipeg, at 2:00 p.m. June's show will also feature some great local artists on the bill, including Check Ça  fave, Derrick Gardner.

What's the Word on Check Ca?

It's been a fun and busy past few months on the show. We've had some wonderful guests and more to come!


Last week we had a very special visit from Dirty Catfish Brass Band. Check out their show at Times Change(d) High and Lonesome Club (234 Main St in Winnipeg) for the Southern Social Club on the first Friday of the month. Each month they bring you DCBB's New Orleans flavoured grooves , a select menu of Southern American dishes and a special music guest. There's two shows and folks can get tickets at the door or through the DCBB website: www.dirtycatfishbrassband.com .  This month, CASATI will appear at the late show. If you missed our chat with the DCBB crew, download the show for March 31 at ckuw.ca


Coming up this week is Mr. Quincy Davis, professor and jazz drumset instructor at the University of Manitoba in the Jazz Studies program. Mr. We're very excited to host this very special guest and talented musician, composer, arranger, etc. Tune in to hear about a special project he's working on and some of his music works. Mr. Davis will be on the show this Friday (April 7).

What's on tonight?

Hey, hey, Check Ça fans. It's rainy and snowy in the 'Peg these days, so we need to heat things up on the radio dial. Maybe some sizzling, jazz, some hot funk, and some fire-y latin beats, and who knows what else will be burnin' up the turnables tonight! Tune in for your weekly 'hot toddy' Check Ça fix.

Shout out to Michael Cain and the Brandon crew for the Brandon Jazz Festival this weekend (March 16-18). One of the headliners is a Check Ça fave: Dirty Catfish Brass Band. DCBB will be in the booth with us on the show March 31st, but if you can't wait, head out to Brandon this weekend.


Also putting Marisolle Negash on your radar if she isn't already. She's having a release event for her release "Spaceship" tonight (March 17) at Forth at 171 McDermot Avenue (Winnipeg), and will be at the Albert Street Cocktail Company at 91 Albert Street on Wednesday (March 22) and SMITH in the hotel at the Forks (Winnipeg) next weekend (March 24-25). Looking forward to hearing Marisolle cool RnB and neosoul vibes on the keys. Check it out.

Derrick Gardner on the air waves

Derrick is professor with the University of Manitoba Jazz Studies and is also a talented and internationally renown jazz trumpeter, composer, arranger and instructor. The show featured music selected in recognition for Black History Month (February). Throughout the show, Derrick shared anecdotal and historical tidbits about the music played.
