Commander Cain in the House!
Checkça....Check it out folks - Mr. Michael Cain dropped by the show and gave us 'goods' on life and music.
Michael Cain, musician, teacher and composer, currently Associate Professor of Jazz Studies at the Brandon University School of Music came by the show on April 18 (http://ckuw.ca/programs/detail/check-ca/). We chatted about his his work as a musician, his work at the Brandon University, and his upcoming show on April 25 at the Park Theatre with Michael Cain Band. The interview is available for download on the CKUW website (ckuw.ca).
For more information about Mr. Cain and his upcoming performances, check out his website: www.michaelcain.com
Hope to see you all out at The Park Theatre on April 25!
Now, some of you might be wondering how these things come together, but in the first hour of CheckÇa for April 11 (2014) we try to answer that question. Going from the ever funky and creative Bobbi Humprhey, to the fabulous flute-boxing flautist Greg Patillo of Project Trio, to the silken jazz stylings of Hubert Laws, to Canada's own Jef Kearns 'Soulfisticated' flute with hip hop beats underneath: the flute is an instrument not to be trifled with. Not to mention a quick trip into the artistic playground of musical visionary Yusef Lateef with 'Eboness'. And this is just the tip of the iceberg - there are many others out there waiting to be discovered...
Do you have a favourite artist or group you think is CheckÇa worthy? Drop us a line at checkca@ymail.com. We love hearing from listeners - after all, you're a big part of the reason CheckÇa is 15 strong and keepin' keepin' on.
** Remember to tune in to a special interview with musician, composer and teacher Michael Cain.
Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings 'brought it' on April 8 in Winnipeg. Most definitely a show to remember. For many folks it was their first meeting with Sharon & Co., but it certainly will not be the last. And Winnipeggers were grateful for the band's long-awaited return. Old-school funk and soul music is alive and well!
For those who missed the show or those who were there but want to relive a few choice moments, tune in to Check Ca this Friday for a SJDK set, and maybe a few other Daptone and old school funk cuts.... Keep Dap-Dippin'! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yKBhYx6i7I
Check Ça = a Montrealais term meaning check this out...
We're just two sisters who love music - of all different sorts. We love to share what we have & always like to hear new stuff.
